A Letter from the Director

It seems only yesterday that I contacted The Boston Language Institute about taking the TEFL Certificate Program; in fact, it was almost five years ago. Owen Plant was my lead trainer and, as many of you will attest; his quirky sense of humour and classroom antics carried me through the sometimes stressful, oftentimes fun-filled, but always enriching program. I believe we have a stellar TEFL program, and this is evidenced by the feedback we get from you, our graduates, and also from the fact that the schools that hire you are eager to hire more of you! We have certainly changed since I was enrolled in 2002, thanks in part to your comments and suggestions. Ever committed to excellence and aware of the changing nature of our industry, we are constantly seeking ways to improve and enhance the TEFL Certificate program.

I must say I have thoroughly enjoyed my four years at The Boston Language Institute and have made many wonderful friends along the way. From being TEFL trainee to ESL teacher to Senior TEFL Trainer, I have always given my best, and I shall endeavour to do the same as the director of the department. Please do contact me if you need any help with your CVs, résumés or just need advice on the choice of ESL books.

I would like to reiterate Siri Karm's invitation to keep in touch with us; if you change your email address, do let us know so you can continue to receive our newsletter. I love reading all of your emails, even if I do so with a pang of envy as you write to us from exotic locations around the world. It's always gratifying to know that, thanks in part to us and the TEFL Certificate, so many of you have made such progress. The experience you gain abroad is invaluable to you when you return home and start to resume your careers here in the States.

If any of you would be willing to give a helping hand to TEFLers starting out in our industry, we would greatly appreciate the offer. And if you are ever in the neighbourhood, please contact us. We welcome any TEFL grads who are passing by and are willing to talk to current trainees about teaching children, job-hunting, adjusting to culture shock -- in fact, anything that would be of interest to our trainees. In that vein, I'd like to say thanks to Eliza Bent, who regaled us recently with stories of her experience in Italy, and Stephanie Meager, who shared with us stories about her time in China.

I wish you all a happy and successful New Year.

Best wishes,

Kym Perkins
