Share Your TEFL Teaching Experience

In July, 2003 we had the pleasure of welcoming the TEFL program's first career workshop guest speaker. Pat Lilja, who graduated from the program in December, 2001, has been teaching in Japan for the past two years. Home on leave from his job teaching at a high school, Pat joined us to make a presentation about his overseas experience, and to answer questions from trainees. He explained the various options: joining the JET program, teaching at a language school, teaching at a Japanese elementary or high school. He particularly enjoys the high school where he now works, because he is given free rein to create his own lessons (and use the TEFL methodology!). Many schools do not offer this freedom. After the session was over, he treated us to some Japanese snack favorites, such as octopus on a stick.

Pat is willing to correspond with trainees and graduates interested in working in Japan, and may be reached through the TEFL office.

If you plan to be in Boston, are interested in talking with a future group about your own teaching experience, in the US or abroad, please contact Myrna at tefl@boslang.com. If you can’t be here during the career workshop we will arrange a time that is convenient for you. Even a 15-20 minute session would be great!
